Responsibilities

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for safely operating loaders, excavators, and other heavy machinery to manage the handling and flow of bulk mineral concentrates—primarily copper, gold, and ore—within the terminal. This includes pushing product into designated storage areas, maintaining pit and tipper areas, supporting efficient vessel loading operations by pushing product from the warehouse floor into a designated loading pit (or hopper), which feeds a conveyer belt system used to load ocean-going vessels docked at the port. Operators also maintain safe and efficient conditions in and around the tipping area, storage zones, and loading infrastructure, while supporting ongoing site maintenance.

Major Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment (e.g., loaders, excavators) to move, level, and stockpile copper/gold concentrate and ore within the warehouse and yard.
  • Push product into designated storage areas in the warehouses.
  • Push product into the loading pit/hopper, which feeds the ship-loading conveyer belt system, ensuring consistent material flow during vessel loading.
  • Maintain clean and safe conditions around the pit, tipper, and warehouse, removing any excess or spilled material that could interfere with operations.
  • Monitor material flow into the chute/conveyer belt during vessel loading and communicate with the Port Foreman to coordinate timing and volumes.
  • Communicate clearly with truck drivers and other team members to coordinate safe and efficient product movement.
  • Perform snow removal as needed to maintain safe access throughout the terminal.
  • Perform routine inspections and light maintenance on equipment; report any mechanical issues to maintenance staff.
  • Comply with all terminal safety procedures, environmental regulations, and reporting protocols.
  • Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and training as required.
  • Cross-train in other operational tasks and assist during vessel loading or shutdown periods.
  • Other duties as assigned by Port Foreman or Division Manager.

You Possess

  • Valid Heavy Equipment Operator Certificate is an asset
  • Previous experience operating heavy mobile equipment (Cat 980 or equivalent Front End Loader and Cat D6 or equivalent Dozer experience).
  • Minimum 2,000 hours of loader and/or excavator operation in an industrial, mining, or bulk material handling environment.
  • Experience working in a port, terminal, mining, or bulk commodity setting is considered a strong asset.
  • Familiarity with equipment maintenance procedures; mechanical aptitude (welder, mechanic, or machinist experience) is a bonus but not required.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform routine equipment inspections and minor preventative maintenance.
  • A strong safety mindset and commitment to maintaining a hazard-free work environment.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including rain, snow, wind, and sub-zero temperatures.
  • Flexible and adaptable, with strong interpersonal skills for working in a tight-knit, team-based industrial environment.
  • High attention to detail and a strong focus on operational quality and efficiency.
  • Dependable, responsible, and capable of working with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills with a willingness to follow instruction and maintain situational awareness.
  • Strong work ethic and a positive team attitude, especially in high-paced or vessel-loading situations.
  • High level of hand-eye coordination, particularly for tasks involving precision pushing or positioning around loading pits and hoppers.
  • Physically able to work 12-hour shifts in an industrial setting
  • Commitment to safe work practices and teamwork
